Summary

Orphan X faces his most challenging mission ever 。 。 。

Evan Smoak is a man with many identities and a challenging past。 As Orphan X, he was a government assassin for the off-the-books Orphan Program。 After he broke with the Program, he adopted a new name and a new mission - The Nowhere Man, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble。

Having just survived an attack on his life, and the complete devastation of his base of operations, as well as his complicated (and deepening) relationship with his neighbour Mia Hall, Evan isn't interested in taking on a new mission。

But one finds him anyway。

Aragon Urrea is a kingpin of a major drug-dealing operation in South Texas。 He's also the patron of the local area - suppling employment in legitimate operations, providing help to the helpless, a rough justice to the downtrodden, and a future to a people normally with little hope。 He's complicated - a not completely good man, who does bad things for often good reasons。

However, for all his money and power, he is helpless when one of the most vicious cartels kidnaps his innocent eighteen-year-old daughter, spiriting her away into the armoured complex that is their headquarters in Mexico。 With no other way to rescue his daughter, he turns to The Nowhere Man。

Now not only must Evan figure out how to get into the impregnable fortress of a heavily armed, deeply paranoid cartel leader, but he must decide if he should help a very bad man - no matter how just the cause。

Currently my favorite series going。 This starts off as an ordinary good man v cartel drug lord kind of thriller, but offers some unexpected twists and real character development to go along with the intense action and fight scenes。 I would mark it down for unresolved endings but sigh that is just how this series rolls。

I really wanted to love this book。 This is one of my favourite series and I have been looking forward to this book, well, since I read the last one, over a year ago。 But, and I hate to say this, it promised loads and, well, just didn't completely deliver for me。 It felt almost like it's a bit of padding as, to be honest, it didn't really move X's story along as the other books have done。 Maybe I am being too harsh。 But after the previous books, I had expectations of what I would read herein and, I really wanted to love this book。 This is one of my favourite series and I have been looking forward to this book, well, since I read the last one, over a year ago。 But, and I hate to say this, it promised loads and, well, just didn't completely deliver for me。 It felt almost like it's a bit of padding as, to be honest, it didn't really move X's story along as the other books have done。 Maybe I am being too harsh。 But after the previous books, I had expectations of what I would read herein and, apart from a few oblique references to that matter, nothing materialised。Also, I know Evan is the bees knees, and does have help from a few badass associates, but really。。。 what the author has him achieving herein, defied even my forgiving nature。 It was a step too far for me, sorry。But, I loved Joey in this book。 And Dog the dog。 They provided me with the light relief and gave me the will to carry on。 We also had Mia and Peter and, well, they had a bit of a bad time too which did tug on the old heartstrings。 But Evan disappointed me a bit here。 Again, probably more my fault than his。 But I do feel we left the book not as tight as we started it。 But the way it all ended gave me hope for the next book。 And I will be holding on to the hope tightly until I get my hands on book 8 and my faith is rewarded。。。My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book。 。。。more

This is book #7 in the Orphan X series。 This series has been a solid 4 stars for me。 I liked this one, but it was my least favorite。 I wasn't feeling it with the drug cartel。 The fact that one of them needed Evan in his life to fix a wrong jut didn't reel me in。 But even with that said, I still love the MC, Evan。 His interaction with the permanent characters keeps me in。 I like the humor, the dialogue and the characters progression。 I listened to the audio and I enjoyed the narration by Scott Br This is book #7 in the Orphan X series。 This series has been a solid 4 stars for me。 I liked this one, but it was my least favorite。 I wasn't feeling it with the drug cartel。 The fact that one of them needed Evan in his life to fix a wrong jut didn't reel me in。 But even with that said, I still love the MC, Evan。 His interaction with the permanent characters keeps me in。 I like the humor, the dialogue and the characters progression。 I listened to the audio and I enjoyed the narration by Scott Brick。 So all in all, 3 stars。 。。。more

The most interesting aspect of the Orphan X books to me is the balancing act Evan has to constantly do between the two sides of his life。 This book seemed to focus more on the Nowhere Man side of Evan, but, as happens more and more, the personal things influence the client side of things。 This one is different。 The client and circumstances are。。。somewhat complicated。 I think the series is getting stronger as it goes。 Fair warning though, there's some imagery in this one that's not easy。 I know t The most interesting aspect of the Orphan X books to me is the balancing act Evan has to constantly do between the two sides of his life。 This book seemed to focus more on the Nowhere Man side of Evan, but, as happens more and more, the personal things influence the client side of things。 This one is different。 The client and circumstances are。。。somewhat complicated。 I think the series is getting stronger as it goes。 Fair warning though, there's some imagery in this one that's not easy。 I know there always is, but this one did seem to go further。 I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book。 。。。more

Gregg Hurwitz's Orphan X series is the best thriller saga going, and this is another top notch addition。 Once again we get tightly choreographed, over-the-top action sequences, a complex, fast-moving plot, taut writing, and the perilous terrors of X trying to fit into everyday life。There has always been some tension between X's extra-legal vigilantism and a lawful society (centered mostly around his relationship with a District Attorney), but in this story there is more moral ambiguity, as the ' Gregg Hurwitz's Orphan X series is the best thriller saga going, and this is another top notch addition。 Once again we get tightly choreographed, over-the-top action sequences, a complex, fast-moving plot, taut writing, and the perilous terrors of X trying to fit into everyday life。There has always been some tension between X's extra-legal vigilantism and a lawful society (centered mostly around his relationship with a District Attorney), but in this story there is more moral ambiguity, as the 'lost soul' X tries to rescue is a bad man who does a lot of good (or a good guy who does a lot of bad), and there are enough troubling parallels between X and his client to make everyone uncomfortable。Fortunately, Hurwitz is a strong enough writer of the 'show, don't tell' school, and we're spared the facile internal moral hand wringing that plagues many lesser thrillers。 The result is a well worth reading。 。。。more

I'm also wondering if he's considering a spinoff series featuring Joey as she heads off on this road trip of hers。 Guess we'll have to wait and see about that too! I thought this was a very entertaining book, and I really liked the intrigue and action packed story line。 It was a bit difficult to really get into the story as this is the first book in the Orphan X series that I have read。 But, if you are an Orphan X fan, or don't mind not really knowing some of the backstory, then I think you will enjoy this book。I want to thank Gregg Hurwitz, MacMillian Audio, Minotaur Books and Netgalley for giving me an e-copy of this book, in return for an honest review。 I thought this was a very entertaining book, and I really liked the intrigue and action packed story line。 It was a bit difficult to really get into the story as this is the first book in the Orphan X series that I have read。 But, if you are an Orphan X fan, or don't mind not really knowing some of the backstory, then I think you will enjoy this book。I want to thank Gregg Hurwitz, MacMillian Audio, Minotaur Books and Netgalley for giving me an e-copy of this book, in return for an honest review。 。。。more

On top of that problem, Evan is still trying to make sense of the relationships he has with Joey (another Orphan) and Mia, an attractive neighbor and friend。 I have to say that this book is seven parts action and two parts terror with one part normal。 I was surprised how this book started since the last book "Prodigal Son" ended with a cliff hanger。 At times this book was quite philosophical; in comparing legal and illegal, right from wrong。 There are so many shades of grey that sometime the results were trending towards charcoal。 As always, there is action, fighting, and mayhem throughout the book。 Some parts were a bit too gory for me, but the quiet parts saved it for me。 This book ends with a cliff hanger of sorts and I look forward to the next book in this series。 Thank you Netgalley and St。 Martins Press/Minotaur for this ARC。 。。。more

I loved the story and the narrator really brings Evan Smoak to life。 Just as things start to settle down and get back to normal for Evan, everything changes again。 When must you get in bed with the devil to fight evil? Can you discern the difference? Evan, the Nowhere Man, has his work cut out for him in his latest mission。 Highly recommended!

Dark Horse by Gregg Hurwitz is the tenth installment in the popular Orphan X series。 I was apprehensive going in as I hadn’t yet read an Orphan X novel, but the transition into Evan Smoak’s world was seamless。 Hurwitz hooks you into the current narrative while also filling in Smoak’s backstory so that you never feel lost or out of the loop。 It can definitely be read as a standalone but, like me, I bet you’ll want to go back to the beginning after reading this one。 Fast-paced and thrilling, it’s Dark Horse by Gregg Hurwitz is the tenth installment in the popular Orphan X series。 I was apprehensive going in as I hadn’t yet read an Orphan X novel, but the transition into Evan Smoak’s world was seamless。 Hurwitz hooks you into the current narrative while also filling in Smoak’s backstory so that you never feel lost or out of the loop。 It can definitely be read as a standalone but, like me, I bet you’ll want to go back to the beginning after reading this one。 Fast-paced and thrilling, it’s a series to take note of—especially for fans of Jack Reacher or Alex Cross-type series。 I’m not always a fan of cartel thrillers but I quite enjoyed this one。 The plot was intriguing in a West Side Story kind of way and it moved along quickly so that I was engaged the entire time。 I often caught myself holding my breath when Smoak got himself into tight situations (so most of the book) which is a nod to the suspense aspect of this thriller。 It was heart pounding for both the constant action but also the anticipation of conflicts。 There was also an underlying theme throughout of what it means to be family in the face of devastation。 Sometimes with these types of series thrillers our characters lack depth when the book is read as a standalone, with the character development layering slowly over time from book to book。 But in this one, I felt we had good depth and insights into not only our protagonist but also some of the secondary characters。 From what I gathered, Smoak may be cracking a bit and getting himself more detached to people than what he’d been in earlier books。 I’m definitely intrigued by the series now and with an open-ended cliffhanger, I have no doubt we haven’t seen the last of our antihero (and my pretend boyfriend) Evan。 。。。more

P。S。 as this is a series, I do not recommend reading this as a standalone because you will need all the backstory。 Thank you so much @minotaur and @macmillanaudio for the gifted copy! Dark Horse is out 2/8 。。。more

Dark Horse is the seventh instalment in Gregg Hurwitz's thrilling Orphan X series featuring the mysterious Evan Smoak, a former covert operative who is now known as the Nowhere Man, and spends his time helping those who need it most。 His ethical code is severely tested here when he is asked to rescue the daughter of a criminal who has been kidnapped by the vicious and brutal head of a rival cartel。 Aside from the ethical dilemma that Evan faces, the small amount of stability he has in his home l Dark Horse is the seventh instalment in Gregg Hurwitz's thrilling Orphan X series featuring the mysterious Evan Smoak, a former covert operative who is now known as the Nowhere Man, and spends his time helping those who need it most。 His ethical code is severely tested here when he is asked to rescue the daughter of a criminal who has been kidnapped by the vicious and brutal head of a rival cartel。 Aside from the ethical dilemma that Evan faces, the small amount of stability he has in his home life is also being tested, as his relationship with protégé Joey hits the skids as she is determined to be more independent, and the woman he has developed feelings for is facing a crisis of her own。 Will being torn in so many different directions put Evan at risk as he takes on one of the most dangerous opponents of his career? This is truly a fast paced action packed page turner of a book, designed to keep the reader hooked and turning the pages to the very end。 The action scenes are plentiful and certainly thrilling but I really appreciated seeing more of Evan thinking about his life, his relationships and his motivations。 Every book in this series has been strong but I think this has been one of my favourites to date, and I am already looking forward to see where the author takes Evan next。 I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own。 。。。more

First of all, I can't decide if I'm disappointed or impressed with how quickly and excitingly Hurwitz resolved/explained the giant cliffhanger from the previous book。 It's fast, exciting, and you feel right there with Evan as it's happening, but it's also over so quickly and I have so many questions。 It's unfortunately this amazing skill that Hurwitz has with making you feel right in the middle of all the action that earned this fantastic book just 4 stars。 I understand that writing a story abou First of all, I can't decide if I'm disappointed or impressed with how quickly and excitingly Hurwitz resolved/explained the giant cliffhanger from the previous book。 It's fast, exciting, and you feel right there with Evan as it's happening, but it's also over so quickly and I have so many questions。 It's unfortunately this amazing skill that Hurwitz has with making you feel right in the middle of all the action that earned this fantastic book just 4 stars。 I understand that writing a story about cartels necessitates the excessive use of violence and somewhat traumatizing details that need to put even seen-it-all Evan in a tough place, but, man, are some of the scenes rough。 It's just so realistic and raw at times that I had to walk away。That said, I was glued to the story itself。 It's an expertly paced plot full of surprises and twists I was not expecting and that kept ramping up the excitement and the danger。 Hurwitz does a brilliant job of humanizing even the most savage character just enough for their actions to hit even worse。 And Evan gets hits on all sides with this case as his personal life is also in turmoil and all the rules are put to the test。 It truly is a phenomenal story and listening to Scott Brick narrate it is a treat。 He does a great job of expressing urgency, calm, desperation, or whatever emotion is needed for the scene perfectly。 Very happy thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the exciting early listen! 。。。more
